Saint James AME Church

Saint James AME Church, Chicago, Illinois

The congregation of Saint James American Methodist Church began in 1912 as a Sunday School and prayer gathering. St. James joined the AME church in 1914 with the first building being finished in 1915 on South State Street. The congregation moved to its present location in 1933 due to growing attendance. Originally the congregation met in the fellowship hall but later built the main sanctuary where they now gather. In the mid 2010s the church replaced the decaying stained glass windows with newer stained glass of a more vibrant and colorful nature. St. James sees itself as an active member of their community who support and host many programs for their neighborhood and the broader community.
