The National Shrine of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini

The National Shrine of St. Cabrini, Chicago, Illinois

Saint Francis Xavier Cabrini founded Columbus Hospital at 2520 North Lakeview Avenue in Chicago in 1906, three years after her arrival, on the site that had previously housed the North Shore Hotel. She died in the hospital in 1917 at the age of 67, having founded 67 institutions of care during her ministry. After her canonization in 1946, her deathbed at Columbus Hospital increasingly attracted pilgrims, so in order to accommodate their growing volume, a shrine was consecrated by Cardinal Samuel Stritch in 1955. While Columbus Hospital was shuttered in the late 1980s, the condo building that currently occupies the site was not begun until 2006. A major renovation of the shrine, which included the addition of the Prayer Garden, was completed in 2012, and since then the shrine has again been open to the public.
